Intelligent Healthcare Association Announces 2016 Award Recipients
Industry Awards Recognize Leaders in Advanced Healthcare Technology Solutions
NEW YORK, February 22, 2016 — The Intelligent Health Association (IHA) announced today the recipients of the IHA 2016 Awards, both competitive and special recognition.
Each year IHA recognizes an individual or institution that has demonstrated leadership in the digital health community. In 2016, the IHA Special Recognition Award recipient is Humber River Hospital (Toronto, Canada), the first all-digital hospital in North America. Opened in October 2015, serving more than 850,000 with 656 beds, patient care has been reimagined with mission-critical goals depending on technology for delivering enhancements. Receiving the award on March 2 are Dr. Rueben Devlin, president and chief executive officer, Barb Collins, chief operating officer, and Peter, Bak, chief information officer.
This year, IHA offered three competitive awards. The fourth award, the GRAND Award, is chosen from these three awardees.
- The 2016 IHA Improving Patient Care and Health Delivery award is being awarded to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) (Baltimore, Maryland). During a move of the Drs. Rouben and Violet Jiji Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to new quarters, hospital leadership began searching for a solution that would reliably deliver patient monitoring alarm notifications to caregivers’ mobile devices regardless of their locations. Also important to UMMC was finding a solution that enabled care team communication in a quiet manner—an alternative to traditional overhead paging. Selecting Extension Healthcare’s Engage™ Mobile platform with Zebra MC40 phones for the NICU, UMMC found the rate of compliance in communicating critical data increased dramatically. UMMC plans to roll out this solution throughout the entire medical center, with 772 total licensed beds, 8,261 employees, and 1,163 attending physicians/faculty. Receiving the award is Dr. Colleen Driscoll, Neonatologist and NICU Director of Quality Improvement.
- The 2016 Innovative Healthcare Award is being awarded to Kaiser Permanent San Diego (Calif.). With over 600,000 members, 7,700 staff and more than 1,200 physicians, Kaiser Permanente San Diego is a large concern that cares for members at 25 medical facilities, including the 414-bed Medical Center and a 78-bed emergency department. The healthcare system discovered during a routine inventory that the supply of reusable mats required for patient transfer was drastically depleted and orders for disposable mats were on the upswing. It was determined that many of the reusable mats were being tossed out in the trash rather than being refreshed and reused. The cost for the mats, reusable or disposable, were proving to be exorbitant for the San Diego facilities, with projected costs in the millions of dollars. Through its ongoing association with Awarepoint, its real-time location system (RTLS) provider, Kaiser Permanente incorporated tags on each mat, adjusted workflow, and retrained in the proper care and management of the mats. The recipient for this award is Kaiser Permanente financial analyst Andrea Odom.
- The 2016 IHA Comprehensive Integration is being awarded to iNDIGO Health Partners (Traverse City, Michigan), one of the largest private hospitalist groups in the nation. The partnership was facing a dilemma in providing six rural community hospitals with hospitalists who were scheduled manually by a physician at risk of burning out from the complexities of scheduling. With iNDIGO’s anticipated growth, its commitment to maintaining high retention and utilization in rural northern Michigan healthcare was in jeopardy. iNDIGO’s James Levy, Vice President Human Resources, found an alliance with Lightning Bolt Solutions, which provides automated physician scheduling, coupled with a full-time scheduling administrator, provided a flexible, reliable, and scalable scheduling solution. Lightning Bolt automatically optimizes hundreds of complex scheduling rules to create schedules that promote work-life balance, productivity, and overall workflow efficiency. This solution netted a 97.6% physician retention rate and a 35% increase in use in the first five years. During that time, iNDIGO tripled in size yet was able to maintain flexible scheduling without compromising patient care.
Award recipients have been invited to participate in the Intelligent Health Association Awards ceremony at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) 2016 conference and exhibition in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event is being held March 2, 2016, at 5:30pm in at the Intelligent Health Pavilion’s Leadership Theater.
The judges for the categorical Intelligent Hospital Awards are as follows: Georgia Tech professor Gisele Bennett; Virginia-based cybersecurity consultant Deborah Cooper; University of California-San Francisco professor Donna Hudson; University of Wisconsin distinguished researcher Alfonso Gutierrez; and consultant and retired Lucent Technologies manager, John Walz.
The IHA annual awards identify and recognize the most compelling healthcare projects incorporating wireless technologies resulting in sustainable impact on the patient experience, safety and healthcare facility operations. Additionally, the IHA awards are intended to educate the healthcare delivery industry.
